Campaign - FMVSS Label Protective Cover Installation

NUMBER: WXC-60
DATE: 12/18/96

APPLICABILITY:
1997 MY Legacy Models

SUBJECT:
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) Certification Label

Effective with 1997 Model Year Legacy vehicles, the FMVSS Certification Plate was relocated to the trailing surface of the left front (driver) door (see Figure 1). The material of the 1997 MY Legacy FMVSS certification label was also changed from an aluminum plate on previous Legacy models to vinyl.

The new 1997 MY FMVSS certification label including VIN bar code meets all the SAE and regulatory requirements however, over time, there is the possibility that the printing on the label could fade from the use of chemicals (petroleum based cleaners, cleaner/polishes or waxes) on the label on the 1997 MY vehicles identified in Chart 1.

Vehicles must be confirmed as applicable using vehicle inquiry under the Dealer Communication System (DCS).

It is not necessary to install a clear polyester cover if the cover was already attached over the FMVSS certification label even though the vehicle is within VIN range shown in Chart 1.

A clear polyester cover should be installed over the FMVSS certification label on all the early production 1997 MY identified in Chart 1 and confirmed on DCS as applicable which are in your inventory or which you have sold. Customer vehicles can be repaired when the owner brings the vehicle in for scheduled service. The installation instructions are shown below. The clear polyester covers are available under P/N SOA635052 from your facing warehouse at no charge.

Credit for the polyester cover installation will be based on the submission of a properly completed repair order. Dealers will be credited at 0.2 hours at their warranty labor rate.

Clear Polyester Cover Installation

1. Open the left front door and locate the FMVSS certification label on the rear surface of the door edge. (Figure 1)

2. If necessary, clean the door surface around the FMVSS certification label and remove any heavy dirt from the label by rubbing very lightly with a soft cloth. There may be a yellow inspection mark on the FMVSS certification label. Do not attempt to remove the yellow inspection mark.

3. Remove the backing from the clear polyester cover, carefully position the cover over the certification label and start attaching it from one edge then fully and smoothly attach it.

4. Check for air bubbles under the clear polyester cover. If there are air bubbles under the clear polyester which are 10 mm or larger in diameter, use a pin to release the air, then rub the polyester cover to secure it.
