Air Cleaner Chamber - Stalling, MIL ON, Backfire

NUMBER: 11-5900

DATE: 02/25/00

APPLICABILITY:
1999 Legacy, Impreza, Forester

SUBJECT:
Air Intake Chamber Box Breakage

If you should encounter one of the applicable vehicles with a damaged Air Intake Box, please refer to the information below. Symptoms that occur on a vehicle with a damaged Air Intake Box may include, but are not limited to, "start-up and stall" or "check engine" warning light activation.

Additionally, the customer may have noticed a backfire during a cold start, with a partially open throttle. It will be necessary to inspect the air intake chamber and related parts. (See Figure 1). Replacement parts are available through normal parts distribution channels.

There are two different modifications to correct this condition. It will be necessary to read all of the following information before ordering any modified parts. Some of the vehicles may require an ECM and an Air Filter, while other vehicles may only require the ECM.

1) Installing an Air Filter into the Air Intake Chamber (Part Number: 16546AA070).

The Air Filter will not require regular replacement unless it is removed for some other reason in the future. (See Chart 1).

The above chart indicates the starting VIN numbers for vehicles with Air Filters installed during original production into the Air intake Chamber.

Note:
If the vehicle you are working on has a VIN number listed before the VIN numbers in Chart 1, it will be necessary to install an Air Filter.

2) Install a Modified ECU.

Please refer to Chart 2 shown for the correct ECU part number that will be needed for installation.

Note:
The only vehicles that had the modified control unit installed during production were as shown.
