TITLE: Popping Out Of Fifth Gear

APPLIES TO: 99-00 Legacy/Forester

SERVICE TIP:

The SUBARU Technical Support Line has received some reports of 1999MY and 2000MY Legacy and Forester vehicles intermittently popping out of fifth gear when coasting. In all known cases, the technician found the main shaft nut loose.

In some cases, all that was necessary to repair the transmission was to replace, torque to specifications, and stake the nut. In other cases, some damage was found to the hub and syncro. assembly.
