NUMBER: 11-56-99DATE: 09-08-99
APPLICABILITY:
All 2000 Model SUBARU AWD Models
SUBJECT:
State Emission Testing
All 2000 model SUBARU vehicles are 50-State certified to conform to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (herein EPA) Unrestricted National Low Emission Vehicle and California's Low Emission Vehicle emission standards. All 2000 models are All-Wheel-Drive equipped. (For state emission testing information concerning 1999 models, please see bulletin number 11-52-98.)
!WARNING!
Under no circumstances should any SUBARU All-Wheel-Drive (AWD) vehicle be tested on a two-wheel dynamometer. Attempting to do so will result in serious transmission damage. It may also result in uncontrolled vehicle movement and may cause an accident or injuries to persons nearby.
EPA has EXEMPTED all 2000 model SUBARU AWD vehicles from the enhanced emission tests listed below. The exemption language is stated on the underhood Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) label as shown in Figure 1.
^ Loaded Test
^ Idle Test With Loaded Preconditioning
This means that SUBARU AWD vehicles must never be tested on a two-wheel dynamometer. Serious transmission damage will result. Depending upon state requirements, you may substitute a basic 2-speed idle tailpipe test. Under no circumstances should any SUBARU AWD equipped vehicle be modified for state I/M emission testing.
Four-wheel dynamometer testing is approved for the 2000 SUBARU AWD models listed below.
^ Legacy Sedan AWD ^ Impreza Sedan AWD
^ Legacy Sedan SUS AWD ^ Impreza Sport Wagon AWD
^ Legacy Wagon AWD ^ Impreza Outback Sport AWD
^ Legacy Outback AWD ^ Forester AWD
^ Impreza Coupe AWD
Remember that resultant vehicle damage due to improper testing is not covered under the SUBARU Limited Warranty and is the responsibility of the State I/M Program or its contractors or licensees
