REPAIR PROCEDURE/INFORMATION
Refer to the STIS web site for the applicable Subaru Service Manual for diagnostics and troubleshooting; if nothing is found proceed with the following repair procedure.
1) Measure each seat position sensor output data using the SSMII (Subaru Select Monitor) and record the values; refer to the Subaru Service Manual, Body Section 8, Occupant Detection System (Diagnostics) OD (diag), Subaru Select Monitor.
Note:
When measuring make sure the following criteria is met:
^ Ambient temperature is between 32° F to 104° F.
^ Vehicle is parked on level surface.
^ Seat slide position is all the way back and slide rail is securely locked.
^ Seat backrest is fully upright and redining position is securely locked.
Record seat position sensor output data before installing replacement spring:
2) Slide the seat to the most forward position. Remove the hinge spring cover (see Figure 1-4).
3) Remove the backrest redine handle cover. For illustration purposes, the photo shows the handle cover removed to point out the hook that needs to be pushed in gently so that the handle cover can be removed (see Figure 5)
4) Remove the hinge cover; there are 3 screws and 2 dips (see Figure 6-10).
5) Remove the hinge spring by using a dip remover tool (see Figure 11 and 12).
6) Install in reverse order of removal.
^ Install new hinge spring. Note: Make sure to wear safety glasses.
^ Replace the clips on the hinge cover with new ones supplied (make sure they are the same color). Install hinge cover.
^ Make sure seat belt is behind seat belt guide (see figure 13).
^ Install the backrest redine handle cover. Install new hinge spring cover.
7) Check for proper operation of the seat: slides forward, rearward, reclines and locks into place.
8) Again, measure each seat position sensor output data using the SSM (Subaru Select Monitor) and record the values; refer to the Subaru Service Manual, Section 8, Occupant Detection System (Diagnostics) OD (diag). Subtract the output value after replacing the spring from the output value before replacing the spring. If the difference is not in the acceptable range as shown in the chart, perform the system calibration.
Note:
When measuring make sure the following criteria is met:
^ Ambient temperature is between 32° F to 104° F.
^ Vehicle is parked on level surface.
^ Seat slide position is all the way back and slide rail is securely locked.
^ Seat backrest is fully upright and reclining position is securely locked.
9) Check for proper operation on the front passenger seat belt warning chime.
