Drum Brake System: Service and Repair

Rear Drum Brake Assembly

REPLACEMENT

CAUTION:
^ Do not allow brake fluid to come in contact with vehicle body. If it does, wash off with water immediately and wipe away completely.
^ The wheel cylinder is a non-disassembly part. Replace the wheel cylinder as assembly if faulty.


1) Lift up the vehicle, and then remove the rear wheels.
2) Release the parking brake.
3) Remove the brake drum from brake assembly.
4) Remove the brake shoe.
5) Disconnect the brake hose.
6) Remove the rear hub unit bearing.
7) Remove the rear drum brake assembly.
8) Remove the bolts, and then detach the wheel cylinder assembly.





9) Clean the back plate and wheel cylinder assembly.
10) Attach the wheel cylinder assembly onto the back plate, and tighten the bolts.
Tightening torque: 9 N-m (0.9 kgf-m, 6.6 ft-lb)





11) Install the rear hub unit bearing.
12) Install the brake hose.

CAUTION:
When connecting brake hoses, do not twist.


13) Install the brake shoe.
14) Install the brake drum.
15) After installing the rear drum brake assembly, bleed air from the brake line.

INSPECTION
If the deformation or wear of back plate, shoe, etc. are severe, replace them.
