Exhaust System - Paint Is Flaking Off Of Muffler

SUBJECT: MUFFLER, PAINT FLAKING

Introduction

In the event you encounter a customer complaint that the paint is flaking from the back of the muffler, the following repair procedure needs to be performed in lieu of replacing the muffler. Please be aware that the paint on the rear of the muffler is for cosmetic purposes only.

Material Needed

^ Wire brush

^ 220 grit sandpaper

2006-08MY Forester and 2008MY Impreza Sedan and WRX Sedan

^ Can of Dupli-Color(R) High Heat (1200°F) Flat Black spray paint, available at local auto part stores or a can of Krylon(R) High Heat (1200°F) BBQ & Stove Flat Black spray paint, available at local hardware stores.

2009-10MY Forester

^ Can of Rust-Oleum(R) Specialty High Heat Silver Enamel spray paint or equivalent, available at local hardware stores





Note:
One can is sufficient for 5 repairs.

REPAIR PROCEDURE





1. Example of paint flaking from the back of the muffler.

Caution:
Permit muffler to cool down before proceeding.

2. Support exhaust with screw jack and remove muffler from rubber mounting.





Note:
Safety glasses and a respiratory mask should be worn.

3. Tape off the muffler using paper as illustrated.

4. Use a wire brush to remove the lose paint, followed up by using 220 grit sand paper to rough-up the finish.





5. Make sure the surface is free from sanding dust, dirt, oil and grease. A tack rag or cleaning solvent may be used.

Note:
Make sure to read and follow the cautions and instructions on the can before painting the muffler.





6. Carefully paint the muffler, avoiding overspray; a second coat may be required.





7. Remove tape and paper, reinstall muffler to rubber mounting.
