Drum Brake System: Service and Repair
Rear Drum Brake AssemblyREMOVAL
CAUTION:
- Do not allow brake fluid to come in contact with vehicle body. If it does, wash off with water immediately and wipe away completely.
- If there is any fault in the wheel cylinder, replace the wheel cylinder ASSY as a unit or repair it with the repair kit.
1) Lift up the vehicle, and remove the rear wheels.
2) Release the parking brake.
3) Remove the brake drum from brake assembly.
4) Remove the brake shoe.
5) Disconnect the brake hose.
6) Remove the rear hub unit bearing.
7) Remove the rear drum brake assembly.
8) Remove the bolts, and then detach the wheel cylinder assembly.
INSTALLATION
1) Clean the back plate and wheel cylinder assembly.
2) Attach the wheel cylinder assembly onto the back plate, and tighten the bolts.
Tightening torque:
9 Nm (0.9 kgf-m, 6.6 ft-lb)
3) Install the rear hub unit bearing.
4) Install the brake hose.
CAUTION:
When connecting brake hoses, do not twist.
5) Install the brake shoe.
6) Install the brake drum.
7) After installing the rear drum brake assembly, bleed air from the brake line.
REPLACEMENT
1) Remove the piston & cup and the spring from the wheel cylinder.
2) Remove the air bleeder screw and the cap.
3) Clean the inside of wheel cylinder with brake fluid. Check the inside of the cylinder for damage, deformation and wear. Replace the wheel cylinder with ASSY if defective.
4) Apply brake fluid to the inner surface of wheel cylinder and the cup.
5) Make sure that the inner surface of the wheel cylinder and the piston & cup are free of foreign matter. Install the piston & cup to the wheel cylinder, while taking care not to scratch inner surface of the wheel cylinder.
INSPECTION
If the deformation or wear of back plate, shoe, etc. are severe, replace them.
