SUBJECT: Chirping Sound from Engine
INTRODUCTION
If you encounter a customer complaint that there is a chirping type sound coming from the right side of the engine, the top timing belt guide may be rubbing the timing belt, resulting from insufficient clearance between the two.
ENGINE NUMBER RANGE
126119 to 274674.
COUNTERMEASURE IN PRODUCTION
To ensure proper clearance, additional checks were put in place on September 1, 2010 starting with engine number 274675.
REPAIR PROCEDURE/INFORMATION
Verify the sound is coming from the right side timing belt/guide area.
Example of timing belt guide rubbing timing belt.
For timing belt cover, timing belt and timing belt guide removal and installation, refer to the applicable Subaru Service Manual.
Once the timing belt cover is removed, check the timing belt guide clearance (1.0 + 0.5 mm(0.039 + 0.020 in) using a thickness gauge. If out of specification and there is evidence that the guide was rubbing the belt replace the timing belt and guide.
