Interior - Ignition Lock Not Centered In Column Covers

Steering Column Cover/Key Lock Cylinder

INTRODUCTION

If you encounter a customer complaint that the ignition key lock cylinder is not centered in the steering column cover opening, a modification to the upper steering column will be required Refer to the repair procedure listed to remedy the condition

COUNTERMEASURE IN PRODUCTION





A countermeasure in production was made to the upper steering column cover starting with the VINs shown.

PART INFORMATION





Self-Stick Round Felt Pad

(Available at home improvement centers and hardware stores)





Note:
Pads are packaged in quantities of 12~ 24, etc. A package of 12 is enough for 12 repairs.

SERVICE PROCEDURE/INFORMATION





Example of ignition key lock cylinder not centered.








^ Turn the steering wheel in either direction to gain access to the steering column cover screws.

Note:
The steering wheel does not need to be removed; the picture above is for illustration purposes.

^ Pull the tilt/telescopic steering wheel lock lever down.





^ Remove the two screws that secure the upper and lower column cover. Remove the upper and lower steering column cover. Caution: The covers snap-fit together. Be careful when separating.

Note:
A white circle was placed around the felt pad for better visibility.

^ Install a felt pad on the upper cover as shown~ make sure cover is clean and dry prior to installation.

The steering wheel does not need to be removed; the picture above is for illustration purposes.





Note:
This picture is for illustration purposes. The upper column cover is installed, looking up from under the steering column. Some of the wiring harness connectors were disconnected for visual aid. With the covers installed, the ideal installation is to have the column cover hooks as far forward (towards windshield) as possible.





^ Install upper cover and apply forward pressure.





^ Install lower cover by carefully snapping into upper covet; and then apply forward pressure.





^ While applying forward pressure install screws and tighten.





Verify key lock cylinder is centered in column covers.

^ Push the tilt/telescopic steering wheel lock lever up Make sure that the steering wheel is securely locked by moving it up and down and forward and backward.

For vehicles within the Basic New Car Limited Warranty period, this repair may be claimed using the table shown.

Note:
Up to $1.00 may be charged out in sublet to cover the cost of the felt pad.
