Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair


1. Remove four bolts fastening outer gear shift lever boot and slide boot toward shift knob.
2. Unfasten inner gear shift lever boot and slide boot toward shift knob.
3. Remove three gear shift lever case bolts, then the gear shift lever from case.
4. Disconnect negative and positive cables from battery terminals.
5. Disconnect back-up light and fifth gear switch electrical connectors from transmission.
6. Disconnect wiring from starter, then remove the starter.
7. Remove fuel hose clamp from transmission case.
8. Raise and support vehicle.
9. Remove transmission drain plug and drain oil.
10. Disconnect clutch wire from clutch release lever.
11. Remove propeller shaft No. 1 from transmission to transfer case.
12. Remove propeller shaft No. 2 from transfer case to front differential.
13. Remove clutch housing lower plate from transmission case.
14. Support transmission with a suitable jack, then remove bolts securing transmission to engine.
15. Remove support pipe and exhaust center pipe.
16. Remove transmission rear mounting bracket from chassis and transmission.
17. Ensure all connectors are unfastened from transmission, then carefully lower transmission from vehicle.
18. Reverse procedure to install. Torque transmission case and extension housing bolts to 13.5-20.0 ft. lbs. and oil drain plug to 14.5-21.5 ft. lbs.
