Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Remove console box attaching screws, then the console box and bracket.
2. Lift up boot cover and boot No. 2.
3. Remove boot clamp, then boot No. 1 from transmission shift lever case.
4. Press down on shift control case cover and turn counterclockwise, then remove shift control lever.
5. On 4WD models, remove transfer case shift control lever knob.
6. On all models, disconnect battery ground cable, then the transmission breather hose from rear of cylinder head.
7. Remove wiring harness clamp from rear end of intake manifold.
8. Remove starter motor, then the transmission-to-engine attaching bolts.
9. Drain oil from transmission and transfer case.
10. Remove front and rear propeller shafts.
11. Disconnect clutch cable from transmission housing.
12. Remove clutch housing lower plate, then the exhaust center pipe.
13. Remove nuts retaining speedometer cable and disengage cable to transfer case.
14. Install a suitable jack under transmission and transfer case.
15. Remove engine rear mounting crossmember attaching bolts, then the crossmember.
16. Move transmission rearward and lower from vehicle.
17. Remove transmission wiring harness from transmission.
18. Remove gear shift lever case and transfer case from transmission assembly.
