16 Valve Engines
1. Relieve pressure in fuel system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF.2. Drain cooling system, then remove intake manifold stiffener.
3. Disconnect electrical connectors, ground wires, vacuum hoses and cooling hoses as necessary.
4. Disconnect fuel feed and return lines, then remove throttle cover.
5. Disconnect accelerator cable and transmission throttle cable from throttle body, if equipped.
6. Remove air intake pipe and pipe bracket, then the cylinder head cover.
7. Loosen all valve lash adjusting screws fully, then remove timing belt as described under TIMING BELT & TENSIONER.
8. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold, then remove exhaust manifold stiffener.

9. Loosen cylinder head bolts in order shown in Fig. 7, using 8 mm hexagon wrench bit 09900-00415 and hexagon wrench socket 09900-00411 or equivalents.
10. Remove any components that may interfere with removal, then the cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds and distributor using a suitable lifting device.
11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install new cylinder head gasket with side marked TOP facing upward toward the crankshaft pulley side.
b. Ensure oil jet (venturi plug) is installed and not plugged.
c. Apply engine oil to cylinder head bolts, then torque to 25 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Fig. 8.
d. Torque cylinder head bolts to 40 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Fig. 8.
e. Torque cylinder head bolts to 47.5-50.5 ft. lbs. in sequence shown in Fig. 8.
f. Adjust accessory belt tensions, valve clearence, accelerator cable and transmission throttle cable play, and ignition timing.
g. Ensure there is no fuel, coolant or exhaust leakage at all connections.
