16 Valve Engines

1. Relieve pressure in fuel system as described under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF.
2. Disconnect and remove battery, then mark hood for reference and remove hood.
3. Drain cooling system, then remove radiator fan and fan shroud.
4. Remove air intake pipe with hoses, then disconnect accelerator cable and transmission throttle cable from throttle body, if equipped.
5. Remove intake manifold stiffener, then electrical harnesses from clamps.
6. Remove starter motor, then disconnect electrical connectors, ground wires and hoses as necessary.
7. Loosen bolts securing engine to transmission, then raise and support vehicle.
8. Drain engine oil, then disconnect fuel feed and return hoses from pipes.
9. Remove righthand transmission stiffener and transmission fluid hose clamp bolt, if equipped.
10. Remove exhaust pipes, lefthand transmission stiffener, then the clutch or torque converter housing lower plate.
11. On models with automatic transmission, remove torque converter bolts, using gear stopper 09927-56010 or equivalent, to secure flywheel.
12. On models equipped with power steering, disconnect power steering pump with hoses attached and position aside.
13. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect A/C compressor with bracket attached and position aside.
14. On all models, remove nuts securing engine to transmission, then lower vehicle and support transmission with a suitable jack. Do not lift, or support automatic transmission by oil pan.

15. Install a suitable lifting device, Fig. 4, then remove right and left engine mounting bracket bolts.
16. Remove engine assembly from chassis and transmission by sliding towards front, then carefully hoisting from vehicle.
17. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Tighten nuts and bolts to specifications.
b. Adjust water pump, power steering pump and A/C compressor drive belt tension.
c. Adjust accelerator and transmission throttle cable play.
d. Ensure there is no fuel, water or exhaust gas leakage.
