Wheel Bearing: Adjustments

1. Remove wheel, drive flange or free wheeling hub (if equipped), caliper and holder as mentioned previously.
2. Using a suitable spring scale, measure wheel bearing preload as shown in Fig. 21.
3. Preload should be 2.2-6.6 ft. lbs.
4. If preload is not as specified, adjust as follows:
a. Remove wheel bearing locknut and lock washer, then torque bearing nut (1), Fig. 22, to 57.5 ft. lbs., while spinning hub by hand.
b. Loosen bearing nut until torque becomes 0, then retorque nut to 7.5-10.5 ft. lbs. obtain a preload of 2.2-6.6 ft. lbs.
c. After adjustment, ensure to install lock washer and tighten locknut (2), Fig. 22, to specifications.
d. Recheck bearing preload.
5. Install axle shaft drive flange or free wheeling hub (if equipped), circlip, disc brake, caliper and holder and wheel assembly as mentioned previously.
