4-Door

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove clips at rear of console box, then the console box mounting screws at front and retaining clips at rear and console box.
3. Remove shift lever boot cover, then the No. 2 boot.
4. Remove transfer gear shift lever boot clamp, then the transfer gear shift boot.
5. To remove shift control lever, push down gear shift control case cover with fingers and turn it counterclockwise.
6. To remove transfer shift control lever, push down gear shift control case cover with fingers and turn it counterclockwise.
7. Remove battery, dipstick and oil filler tube.
8. Disconnect A/T throttle cable from throttle cam and bracket.
9. Disconnect wiring harness couplers, then remove starter. Do not disconnect starter wiring harness.

10. Remove upper transmission to engine bolts. Right side bolt is longer.
11. Drain transfer oil into appropriate container. If transmission is to be overhauled, drain transmission fluid into appropriate container.
12. Place match marks on joint flanges and propeller shafts, then remove both propeller shafts.
13. Remove nut from end of select cable and E-ring from bracket. Position cable aside.
14. Remove select cable bracket, then remove front exhaust pipes.
15. Remove case left stiffener, then disconnect oil cooler hoses from pipes. Plug all open fittings.

16. On right stiffener, remove bolt "A and loosen bolt "B", Fig. 5.
17. Install driveplate holding tool, part No. 09927-56010 or equivalent, then remove torque converter mounting bolts.
18. Remove lower engine to transmission nuts, then disconnect speedometer cable.
19. Install suitable transmission jack, then remove rear mounting member, torque stopper member and torque stopper bushing.

20. Remove transmission, transfer case and torque converter as an assembly. Keep transmission/transfer assembly horizontal. If assembly is tilted, torque converter may fall off causing personal injury.
21. Remove wiring harness and breather hoses.
22. Remove transfer case mounting bolts, then separate transfer case from transmission.
23. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.
