Component Tests and General Diagnostics
FRONTFig. 5 Wiper/Washer System Wiring (Front):
Refer to wiring diagrams, Fig. 5, during diagnosis and testing procedures.
WIPER/WASHER SWITCH TEST
Fig. 8 Wiper/Washer Switch Continuity (Front):
Refer to Fig. 8, while using a circuit tester to measure switch for terminal to terminal continuity.
NO-LOAD RUN TEST
1. Perform low-speed test as follows:
a. Connect battery positive terminal to blue terminal on motor and battery negative terminal to black lead wire on motor.
b. If motor rotates at 45-55 RPM, motor is operating properly.
c. If not, motor is defective, replace motor.
2. Perform high-speed test as follows:
a. Connect battery positive terminal to blue/red terminal on motor and battery negative terminal to black lead wire on motor.
b. If motor rotates at 68-78 RPM, motor is operating properly. If not, replace motor.
AUTOMATIC STOP ACTION TEST
1. Connect battery positive terminal to yellow/blue terminal of motor on Sidekick or yellow/black terminal of motor on Swift and battery negative terminal to black lead wire on motor, then connect a jumper between blue/white and blue terminals of motor.
2. Motor output shaft should come to a halt at a certain angular position, corresponding to starting position of wiper blade.
3. Stop motor a number of times, and ensure motor stops in same position each time.
BRUSH AND COMMUTATOR TEST
1. Using a circuit tester, measure continuity between blue terminal and black lead wire.
2. If continuity is poor, check brush to commutator contact area.
3. If contact area is fouled, use a cloth dampened with gasoline to clean area.
4. If contact area is coarse or burnt, use a suitable sandpaper to smooth it.
INTERMITTENT WIPER RELAY TEST
1. Disconnect wiper and washer switch electrical connector, then turn wiper switch to INT position.
2. Connect battery positive terminal to yellow/white terminal on Sidekick or yellow/blue terminal on Swift and battery negative terminal to black terminal.
3. If an operating sound is emitted, relay is operating properly.
REAR
Fig. 9 Wiper/Washer System Wiring (Rear):
Refer to wiring diagrams, Fig. 9, during diagnosis and testing procedures.
WIPER/WASHER SWITCH TEST
Fig. 10 Wiper/Washer Switch Continuity (Rear):
Refer to Fig. 10, while using a circuit tester to measure switch for terminal to terminal continuity.
NO-LOAD RUN TEST
1. Connect battery positive terminal to orange terminal on motor and battery negative terminal to black lead wire on motor.
2. If motor rotates at 38-46 RPM, motor is operating properly. If not, replace motor.
AUTOMATIC STOP ACTION TEST
1. Connect battery positive terminal to yellow/blue terminal of motor and battery negative terminal to black lead wire on motor, then connect a jumper between orange and blue/green terminals of motor.
2. Motor output shaft should come to a halt at a certain angular position, corresponding to starting position of wiper blade.
3. Stop motor a number of times, and ensure motor stops in same position each time.
BRUSH AND COMMUTATOR TEST
1. Using a circuit tester, measure continuity between orange terminal and black lead wire.
2. If continuity is poor, check brush to commutator contact area.
3. If contact area is fouled, use a cloth dampened with gasoline to clean area.
4. If contact area is coarse or burnt, use a suitable sandpaper to smooth it.
