Transfer Case: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove distributor assembly, then install a suitable block of wood to prevent engine from hanging down when rear crossmember is removed.
3. Remove console assembly, then the transmission and transfer case shift levers.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Drain transfer case into appropriate container.
6. Remove front and rear propeller shafts.
7. Remove exhaust center pipe, then disconnect speedometer cable.
8. Support transmission using suitable jack, then remove rear crossmember.
9. Lower transmission slowly and check that wood block acts as a stopper for the engine.

10. Remove transmission jack, then lower vehicle.
11. Remove gear shift lever case attaching bolts.
12. Remove breather hose.
13. Remove gear shift lever case, then the transfer case center bolt.
14. Raise and support vehicle.
15. Remove transfer case mounting attaching bolts.
16. Support transfer case using suitable jack.
17. Disconnect 4WD switch electrical connector.
18. Remove front case attaching bolts.
19. Slide transfer case rearward and remove.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
