Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information, then disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain engine oil and coolant, then remove strut tower bar.
3. Remove air cleaner outlet hose.
4. Disconnect accelerator cable.
5. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect throttle cable.
6. On all models, remove 1st timing chain as outlined in Timing Chain.
7. Disconnect the following electrical connectors:
a. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.
b. Idle air control (IAC) valve.
c. Throttle position (TP) sensor.
d. Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor.
e. Evaporative emissions (EVAP) solenoid purge valve.
f. Heated oxygen sensor (H2OS).
g. Coolant temperature switch.
h. Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor.
i. Injector wire harness.
j. Ground terminal from intake manifold.
8. Disconnect hoses and lines, as necessary.
9. Remove intake manifold front stiffener.
10. Disconnect water pipe from intake manifold.
11. Remove exhaust pipe and exhaust manifold stiffener.

12. Loosen cylinder head bolts in sequence, Fig. 3. Remove M6 bolt.
13. Using a suitable lifting device, remove cylinder head with intake and exhaust manifolds.

14. Reverse procedure to install. Apply engine oil to cylinder head bolts, then using sequence shown in Fig. 4, tighten bolts as follows:
a. Torque bolts to 39 ft. lbs.
b.Torque bolts to 61 ft. lbs.
c. Loosen bolts completely using sequence shown in Fig. 3.
d. Torque bolts to 76 ft. lbs.
e. Torque M6 bolt to 8 ft. lbs. after securing head bolts.
