Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
The CKP sensor located on the oil pan (front side) consists of the signal generator (pick-up coil and magnet) and signal rotor (on crankshaft timing belt pulley). As the signal rotor (crankshaft) turns, AC voltage is generated in the pick-up coil. This pulse signal (6 pulses/revolution) is sent to ECM where it is used to calculate the variation of crankshaft speed (detect if misfire occur).
