Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

The sensor (2) consists of magnet (5) and coil (6). For G16 engine, it is mounted on oil pan (3) with specified air gap between the sensor core end and crankshaft timing belt pulley (1) tooth.

For J20 engine it is mounted on cylinder block rear end (4) with specified air gap between the sensor core end and sensor plate tooth on crankshaft.

As the crankshaft turns, AC voltage (pulse) is generated in the sensor. ECM (PCM) detects the crankshaft revolution speed from the signal and uses it as one of the signals for misfire monitoring.
