Compressor HVAC: Service and Repair

Removal
1. Run engine at idle with A/C ON for 10 minutes.
2. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
3. Recover refrigerant from refrigeration system using recovery and recycling equipment.

NOTE: The amount of compressor at removed must be measured and the same amount must be poured when installing the compressor.

4. Disconnect thermal protector lead wire.
5. Disconnect suction and discharge hoses from compressor.

NOTE: Cap open fitting immediately to keep moisture out of system.

6. For G16 engine:
Remove compressor drive belt by loosening compressor mounting bolts.

For J20 engine:
Remove generator belt. Refer to "Cooling Fan / Generator Belt Removal and Installation: J20 Engine".

For H25 engine:
Remove compressor drive belt by loosening tension pulley bolt.

7. Remove compressor with clutch assembly from its mount.
8. If compressor assembly is replaced. Drain oil from compressor, and measure its amount.

Installation

CAUTION: Be sure to use HFC-134a (R-134a) compressor oil.

1. If compressor was replaced, pour new compressor oil with the same amount as that drained from compressor. Refer to "Replenishing Compressor Oil" of "Performance Diagnosis of A/C system:".

NOTE: Compressor assembly supplied from factory is filled up with the following amount of oil.

Amount of oil in compressor
120 cu.cm (120 cc, 7.5 cu.in) for G16 / J20 engine models
100 cu.cm (100 cc, 6.1 cu.in) for H25 engine model

2. Install compressor for G16 engine as follows.
a. Install compressor temporality to bracket, then install compressor drive belt (1).
b. Connect suction and discharge hoses to compressor.

c. Tension compressor drive belt (1) by tightening compressor mounting bolts. Refer to "Performance A/C system:".

NOTE: Tighten bolt (a) first, then (b).

Tightening torque
Compressor mounting bolt (for G16 engine) (a), (b): 23 N.m (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 lb-ft)

3. Install compressor for J20 engine as follows.
a. Install compressor to its bracket.

Tightening torque
Compressor mounting bolt (for J20 engine) (a): 23 N.m (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 lb-ft)

b. Connect suction and discharge hoses to compressor.

c. Install generator belt. Refer to "Cooling Fan / Generator Belt Removal and Installation: J20 Engine" for details.

4. Install compressor for H25 engine as follows.

a. Install compressor to its bracket.

Tightening torque
Compressor mounting bolt (for H25 engine) (a): 23 N.m (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 lb-ft)

b. Connect suction and discharge hoses to compressor.

c. Install compressor drive belt. Refer to "Power Steering Belt Check and Adjustment: " for Installation and Belt Tension.

5. Connect thermal protector lead wire.
6. Evacuate and charge system according to "Operation Procedure for Charging A/C with Refrigerant:".

CAUTION: Be sure to use HFC-134 (R-134a) compressor oil.
