SUBJECT:
INTERMITTENT RADIO / DVD / NAVIGATION SCREEN OPERATION WITH POSSIBLE DTCS STORED
MODEL(S): XL7 (JC636)
YEAR: 2007~
CONDITION:
Rear DVD screen blank/inoperative, speaker popping noise, radio display flashing ON and OFF, Nav screen flashing ON and OFF, radio operates for 5 to 10 minutes then turns OFF by itself, after 20 minutes it will reactivate for a short time.
CAUSE:
This condition may be due to shorted wiring harness, specifically the white (WH) antenna/amplifier enable wire.
CORRECTION:
DO NOT REPLACE THE RADIO without confirming the harness condition. Always check for DTCs when diagnosing any radio operation problem. Follow service manual diagnostic information for any specific DTC listed. In relation to the above symptom, there are four areas to focus on for radio inoperative when described as "intermittent". for NON-DVD (Dual Play) radios, follow the steps in # 1 and # 4 below. For DVD (Dual Play) equipped models, follow the steps in # 1, # 2, # 3, and # 4 below.
PART(S) INFORMATION
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
1. For all radio types. Check for a pinched wire at the passenger front door sill trim (carpet retainer) and at the "B" pillar lower trim (lower trim clip). The white wire (amp power/amp enable) should be equal to battery voltage. A short to ground causes the supply IC to go into thermal shutdown - this takes 5-10 minutes from cold start. When the IC cools, radio function is restored but for a decreasing period of time. This failure mode causes unnecessary radio replacement and repeat visits since the new radio appears to operate normally for up to 10 minutes with the fault condition present. It is important to verify the repair by either reading the voltage at the amp enable pin with the radio operating (voltage should be equal to battery voltage), or by allowing the radio to operate for at least 15 minutes.
2. For DVD vehicles, check that the harness is not pinched under any attachment screws of the video display module (you need to check the wiring very closely, if it is not routed as seen above, the damage is sometimes difficult to see).
3. For DVD vehicles, the video module is supplied directly from the IP harness. This very long harness is manually clipped into the gutter on the left sill. It has a tendency to loop away from the "B" pillar and become trapped under the driver seat rear outboard attachment point. The codes B1288 (Video display) and B1289 (Video bright) are commonly found in these cases because the seat attachment tends to take out more than one circuit (esp. shielded circuits). When the pinch involves the RMT_ENABLE circuit, the conditions described in 1 above occur.
4. For all radio types. The white "enable wire" for the antenna may be pinched at the passenger side "D" Pillar or roof liner near the antenna.
