Parking Brake System: Adjustments




Parking Brake Inspection and Adjustment

NOTE:

Make sure for the following conditions before performing parking brake inspection and adjustment.

- Parking brake shoes are not worn beyond limit. Testing and Inspection

Inspection

- When parking brake lever is pulled up, inspect the following items. If defective is found, adjust or replace parking brake cable.

- Operation of parking brake lever is smooth.
- Rear wheels are locked firmly.
- Operate parking brake lever with 200 N (20.4 kgf, 45.0 lbf) as shown, count ratchet notches.

NOTE:
One click sound corresponds to one notch.

Parking brake stroke
When lever is pulled up at 200 N (20.4 kgf, 45.0 lbf): 5 to 7 notches





- Inspect brake warning light

a When parking brake lever is released, brake warning light turns off.
b Then inspect brake warning light is turned on within 1 notch.
c When parking brake lever is pulled up. If defective is found, check and/or repair the following items.

- Remaining amount of brake fluid in master cylinder reservoir
- Brake fluid switch (attached to master cylinder reservoir)
- Parking brake lever switch

Adjustment

NOTE:

Make sure for the following conditions before cable adjustment.

- Parking brake shoes are not worn beyond limit, and self adjusting mechanism operates properly.

1) Remove console box. Diagrams
2) Hoist vehicle and remove rear wheel.
3) Release parking brake lever.
4) Remove service plug (1) from rear brake disc as shown in figure.





5) Align service hole and parking brake shoe adjuster by rotating rear brake disc.

NOTE:
Use wheel nuts (1) to hold the disc securely against the hub.

6) Adjust brake shoe adjuster in the direction of [A] until the brake disc is locked, by using flat end rod or the like (2).
7) Adjust brake shoe adjuster in the direction of [B] until the brake disc rotates smoothly.











8) Operate parking brake lever more than 3 times.
9) Release parking brake, tighten or loosen adjusting nut (1) so as to obtain specified parking brake stroke.

Parking brake stroke (with operating force at 200 Nm (20.4 kgf, 45.0 lbf))
: 5 to 7 notches









10) After completed adjustment, install service plug on rear brake disc.
11) Install rear wheel Removal and Replacement
12) Lower vehicle and make sure that brake disc is no dragging.
13) Install console box. Diagrams
