Instrument Cluster / Carrier: Description and Operation
Combination Meter Description
Combination meter (1) uses signals (information) sent from each control module by CAN communication to control speedometer, tachometer, ECT meter, warning light and indicator light (other than headlight auto leveling warning light (if equipped), air bag warning light, low fuel warning light and turn signal indicator light).
For more information on CAN communication data received by combination meter, refer to CAN Communication System Description CAN Communication System Description.
Speedometer
ECM calculates vehicle speed using signal from wheel speed sensor and sends vehicle speed signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, combination meter drives speedometer based on vehicle speed signal.
Tachometer
ECM calculates engine speed using signal from CKP sensor and sends engine speed signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, combination meter drives tachometer based on engine speed signal.
ECT Meter
ECM calculates engine coolant temperature using signal from ECT sensor and sends engine coolant temperature signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, combination meter drives ECT meter based on engine coolant temperature signal.
Fuel Meter
- Fuel level sensor sends fuel level signal to combination meter. Using this fuel level signal, combination meter calculates current fuel level and drives fuel meter.
- When remaining fuel is less than about 9.9 liters (20.92/17.42 US/Imp. pt.), low fuel warning light lights up.
Master Warning Indicator
Master warning indicator flashes while state message is displayed as the information display to call attention of the driver. For details, refer to Information Display Message Table.
Information Display
Information display indicates the following information on each display window area.
Shift position (A/T model)
TCM sends A/T shift position signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, combination meter makes LCD (shift position) display based on A/T shift position signal.
Fuel consumption
- Combination meter calculates fuel consumption using running distance during a certain period of time and fuel consumption signal sent from ECM through CAN communication to combination meter and makes LCD (fuel consumption) display it.
- Fuel consumption display can be selected among "instantaneous fuel consumption display" and "average fuel consumption display".
Driving range
Combination meter calculates driving range using remaining fuel, running distance during a certain period of time and fuel consumption signal from ECM through CAN communication to combination meter and makes LCD (driving range) display it.
Average speed
Combination meter calculates average speed using running distance during a certain period of time and vehicle speed signal from ECM through CAN communication to combination meter and makes LCD (average speed) display it.
Outside air temperature
- BCM calculates outside air temperature using signal from outside air temperature sensor and sends outside air temperature signal through CAN communication to combination meter. Then, combination meter makes LCD (outside air temperature) display current outside air temperature based on outside air temperature signal.
- Display range of outside air temperature is from -30 °C (-22 °F) to 50 °C (122 °F). When ignition switch is turned on, "-- °C" appears on LCD until outside air temperature signal is received. Also, when outside air temperature drops to 3 °C (37.4 °F) or lower, message to warn driver of frozen road surface is displayed on LCD.
NOTE:
- As value displayed on LCD is temperature detected at outside air temperature sensor, actual outside air temperature when freezing mark turns on is supposedly about 0 °C (32 °F).
- While vehicle is at stop or running at lower than 30 km/h (19 mile/h) vehicle speed, even when outside air temperature rises, displayed value does not change.
Information Display Message Table
Listed in the table below are state messages displayed on information display.
Messages with an asterisk mark (*1 and *2) are used twice but their priority and display color vary depending on display conditions.
When two or more messages are involved, they are displayed in the order of higher to lower priority. If a new message occurs while messages are being displayed, interrupt message appears and then messages are displayed in the order of higher to lower priority.
Message in orange color is displayed continuously as long as applicable display condition remains and at the same time, master warning indicator flashes. On the other hand, message in white color is displayed for 5 to 7 seconds continuously and then goes off.
NOTE:
*3: Except C1016, C1027, C1037, C1065, C1066, C1067, C1075, C1076, C1077 and C1078.
Self Warning Function
Combination meter has self warning function to warn any of troubles listed below when it detects such trouble.
