Jump Starting: Service and Repair

Jump Starting in Case of Emergency

With Booster Battery

NOTE:

Trying to start a manual transmission vehicle equipped with a catalytic converter by pushing or towing it may cause damage to the emission control system and/or other components.

Do not try to start a manual transmission vehicle by pushing or towing it.

Both booster and discharged battery should be handled carefully when using jumper cables. Follow the procedure outlined below, being careful not to cause sparks.

WARNING:

Failure to take proper precautions when jump starting a vehicle may result in serious personal injury and/or damage to electronic components of either the vehicle with a dead battery or the vehicle used for jump starting.

- Remove rings, watches and other jewelry. Wear approved eye protection.
- Never expose the battery to an open flame or electric spark. A battery generates highly flammable and explosive hydrogen gas.
- Battery fluid is a corrosive acid. Do not allow it to contact eyes, skin, fabrics, or painted surfaces of the vehicle. If the fluid contacts any of them, immediately and thoroughly flush the affected area with a large quantity of water.
- To avoid a danger of short circuit, do not allow a metal tool or jumper cable to touch the positive terminal of the battery (or a metal piece in contact with it) and any metal part of the vehicle at the same time.
- Keep the battery out of the reach of children.
- Be sure to connect the negative jumper cable to a solid engine ground as instructed below.

1) For A/T model, place select lever in "P" and apply parking brake before starting the engine.

For M/T model, place gear shift lever in "Neutral" and apply parking brake before starting the engine.
2) Turn off ignition, lights and all other electrical loads.
3) For battery that cell caps are equipped, check electrolyte level. If it is below low level line, add distilled water.
4) Attach one of jumper cable terminals to positive (+) terminal of booster battery and other terminal of same cable to positive (+) terminal of discharged battery. (Use 12-volt battery only to jump start engine).
5) Attach one of remaining jumper cable terminals to negative (-) terminal of booster battery, and other terminal of same cable to solid engine ground (such as exhaust manifold) at least 45 cm (18 in.) away from battery of vehicle.
6) Start engine of vehicle with booster battery and turn off electrical accessories. Then start engine of vehicle with discharged battery.
7) Disconnect jumper cables in exact reverse order.

With Charging Equipment

NOTE:

Using 24-volt charging equipment to jump start the engine will cause serious damage to electric and electronic system components.

Use only 12-volt charging equipment with a negative ground to jump start the engine.
