Disassembly/Assembly

DISASSEMBLY

Fig. 30 Replacing Valve Cotters:





1. Remove delivery pipe with injectors, intake manifold with throttle body, exhaust manifold and distributor from cylinder head.
2. Remove camshaft timing belt pulleys, camshafts and valve lash adjusters as outlined under CAMSHAFTS & HYDRAULIC VALVE LASH ADJUSTER.
3. Using valve lifters No. 09916-14510 and No. 09916-48910 or equivalents, compress valve springs, then using forceps remove valve cotters Fig. 30.
4. Release tool and remove spring retainer and valve spring.
5. Remove valve from cylinder head.
6. Remove valve stem seal from valve guide, then valve spring seat.
7. Using valve guide remover No. 09916-44910 or equivalent, drive valve guide out from combustion chamber side to valve spring side.

ASSEMBLY

1. Ream guide holes using 11 mm for DOHC or 12 mm for SOHC reamer to remove burrs.

2. Heat cylinder head uniformly to a temperature of 176-212°F, then drive new oversize valve guide into hole using tools shown in Fig. 37. Drive new valve guide until valve guide installer contact cylinder head. Ensure valve guide protrudes by .91 inch for DOHC or .55 inch for SOHC from cylinder head.
3. Ream valve guide bore using 5.5 mm for DOHC or 7 mm for SOHC reamer. Clean bore after reaming.
4. Install valve spring seat on cylinder head.

5. Lubricate and install new valve stem seal to valve guide, Fig. 39. Install seal to guide by pushing tool by hand.
6. Lubricate and install valves, then valve spring and spring retainer. Each valve spring has top end (large pitch end) and bottom end (small pitch end). Small pitch end must be facing bottom (spring seat side) Fig. 41.
7. Compress valve spring and fit two valve cotters into groove provided on valve stem.
8. Install intake manifold with throttle body, exhaust manifold and delivery pipe with injectors to cylinder head.
