SUBJECT: SQUEALING NOISE FROM TRANSMISSION/TRANSFER CASE
MODEL: SAMURAI
YEAR: ALL
A high pitched squealing noise coming from the transmission or transfer case area may be caused by a dry oil seal. Four possible sources are:
1. Transmission extension case oil seal.
2. Transfer gearbox input shaft oil seal.
3. Transfer gearbox output front shaft oil seal.
4. Transfer gearbox rear case oil seal.
Support the vehicle by both axles in a safe manner and so that it can be operated with the drivetrain turning. Operate the vehicle in the gear and at the speed which duplicates the noisy condition.
Spray each of the oil seals with silicone lubricant until the noise disappears. This will indicate the dry seal. Lubricate; or replace and lubricate, as necessary to correct the problem.
