Ignition Timing: Adjustments
When checking ignition timing, ensure engine is at normal operating temperature and running at specified curb idle speed, with headlamps, heater fan, rear defogger (if equipped) and A/C (if equipped) off. Connect timing light sensor lead to No. 1 spark plug lead, without piercing insulation of lead. When checking ignition timing, ensure engine is at normal operating temperature and specified curb idle speed, with all electrical loads switched off.
1. Connect timing light sensor lead to No.1 spark plug lead. Ensure not to pierce insulation of lead.
2. Remove monitor coupler cap beside ignition coil.

3. Connect C and D terminals of monitor coupler or D terminal to body, Fig. 2. This will fix timing on initial timing setting. Ensure timing does not change even when engine speed is increased. If timing changes with an increase in engine speed, terminal D is not grounded properly.
4. If initial timing setting is not within specifications, loosen flange bolts and adjust timing by turning distributor assembly.
