Timing Belt: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative cable at battery.
2. Air cleaner assembly with AFM (Air Flow Meter) and outlet hose.
3. Air cleaner bracket.
4. Raise car.
5. Fender apron extension on right side. Remove clip after pushing center pin. But do not push it too far in, or it will fall off into fender.
6. Water pump belt and its pulley. Loosen generator pivot bolts and its adjusting bolt and remove water pump belt.
7. Crankshaft pulley.
Locking crankshaft for Manual Transmission Model.
Locking crankshaft for Automatic Transmission Model.
(1) LOCK crankshaft to loosen crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley bolts.
NOTE: To remove crankshaft pulley with engine assembly mounted on body, it is necessary to remove crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt. If engine assembly is dismounted, bolt removal is unnecessary.
(2) Using special tool (5 mm hexagon wrench bit), loosen crankshaft pulley bolts.
(3) Using special tool (17 mm socket), remove crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt and crank shaft pulley.
8. Timing belt outside covers (upper & lower). To facilitate cover removal, loosen engine right side mounting bolt and push air cleaner bracket to the right.
9. For reinstallation of timing belt, set camshaft timing belt pulleys and crankshaft timing belt pulley as shown in image, by turning crankshaft.
10. Timing belt.
(1) Remove tensioner stud and loosen tensioner bolt.
(2) Remove tensioner spring and damper, and then remove timing belt.
CAUTION:
- After timing belt is removed, never turn intake camshaft, exhaust camshaft and crankshaft independently more than such an extent as shown below. If turned, interference may occur between pistons and valves and parts related to piston and valves may be damaged.
1. Camshafts (INTAKE AND EXHAUST) allowable turning range: By punch mark at "I" or "E", within 20° from mark on cylinder head cover on both right and left.
2. Crankshaft allowable turning range: By key on crankshaft, within 90° from mark on oil pump case on both right and left.
CAUTION:
- Never bend timing belt.
11. Tensioner and tensioner plate.
INSPECT
1. Timing belt for wear or crack. Replace it as necessary.
2. Tensioner for smooth rotation.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. Tensioner plate to tensioner. Insert lug of tensioner plate into hole of tensioner.
2. Tensioner and tensioner plate.
NOTE: Do not tighten tensioner bolt with wrench yet. Hand tighten only at this time. Check to ensure that plate movement in arrow direction as shown in image, causes tensioner to move in the same direction. If no associated movement between plate and tensioner occurs, remove tensioner and plate again and reinsert plate lug into tensioner hole.
3. Turn camshaft timing belt pulleys (INTAKE AND EXHAUST) so that punch mark "I" on intake side camshaft timing belt pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover, and punch mark "E" on exhaust side camshaft timing belt pulley is aligned with mark on cylinder head cover, but don't turn each pulley beyond the allowable turning range.
NOTE: If pulleys don't stop in place due to counter force of valve spring, hold them in place by using bolts and flanged nuts as shown in image.
4. Check that punch mark on crankshaft timing belt pulley is aligned with arrow mark on oil pump case. if not, align two marks by turning crankshaft but be careful not to turn it more than its allowable turning range.
5. Timing belt, tensioner spring and damper. With three sets of marks aligned and tensioner plate pushed up, install timing belt on three pulleys in such a way that drive side of belt is free from any slack. Install tensioner spring and spring damper. Hand - tighten tensioner stud.
NOTE: When installing timing belt, match arrow mark on timing belt with rotating direction of crankshaft. In this state, No.1 piston is at top dead center of compression stroke.
6. To take up slack of timing belt, turn crankshaft two rotations clockwise. After making sure that belt is free from slack, tighten tensioner stud first and then tensioner bolt to each specified torque. Then confirm again that three sets of marks are aligned respectively.
7. Timing belt outside covers (upper and lower).
NOTE: Before installing, make sure that seal is between water pump and oil pump case.
8. Crankshaft pulley. Remove crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt and install crankshaft pulley. With crankshaft locked, tighten crankshaft pulley bolts and crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt to specified torque.
9. Water pump pulley and water pump drive belt.
10. Air cleaner bracket. Tighten engine right side mounting bolt to specified torque.
11. Air cleaner assembly with AFM and outlet hose.
12. Fender apron extension on right side.
13. Negative cable at battery.
