Timing Belt: Service and Repair
Removal1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly with AFM and AFM outlet hose, then the air cleaner bracket.
3. Raise and support vehicle.
4. Remove right side fender apron extension. Do not push center pin in too far as it may fall into fender.
5. Remove alternator/water pump belt and water pump pulley.
6. Remove crankshaft pulley as follows:
Fig. 8 Locking Crankshaft. Manual Transmission:
Fig. 9 Locking Crankshaft. Automatic Transmission:
a. Lock crankshaft to loosen crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley bolts, Figs. 8 and 9. If engine is in vehicle, it is necessary to remove crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt. If engine is removed from vehicle, crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt need not be removed.
b. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts using 5 mm hexagon socket.
c. Remove crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt using 17 mm socket.
7. Remove timing belt upper and lower outside covers.

Fig. 11 Removing Timing Belt:
Fig. 12 Allowable Turning Range Of Timing Belt Pulleys:
8. For installation of timing belt, set camshaft timing belt pulley and crankshaft timing belt pulley as shown in Fig. 10, by turning crankshaft.
9. Remove timing belt as follows:
a. Remove tensioner stud and loosen tensioner bolt, Fig. 11.
b. Remove tensioner spring and damper, then the timing belt. Once timing belt is removed, never turn camshafts or crankshaft independently more than shown in Fig. 12, or internal engine damage may occur.
10. Remove tensioner and tensioner plate.
Inspection
1. Inspect timing belt for wear or cracks, replace as necessary.
2. Ensure tensioner rotates smoothly.
Installation
Fig. 13 Holding Camshaft Pulley On Timing Marks:
1. Install tensioner plate on tensioner. Lug of tensioner plate must fit in hole of tensioner.
2. Install tensioner assembly. Hand tighten tensioner bolt only at this time. Plate movement in upward direction should cause tensioner to move in same direction. If not, repeat step one.
3. Turn camshaft timing belt pulleys until punch mark on pulleys aligns with marks on cylinder head. Do not turn each pulley beyond range specified in Fig. 12. If pulleys do not stop in place due to counter force of valve spring, hold pulleys in place using bolts shown in Fig. 13.
4. Turn crankshaft timing belt pulley until punch mark on pulley aligns with arrow mark on oil pump case. Do not turn pulley beyond range specified in Fig. 12.
5. Install timing belt on pulleys with drive side of belt free from any slack. Match arrow mark on timing belt with rotating direction of crankshaft (clockwise).
6. Install tensioner spring and spring damper. Hand tighten tensioner stud.
7. Turn crankshaft two rotations clockwise after installing belt to take up slack of belt. Ensure marks on all pulleys are aligned.
8. Ensure seal is between water pump and oil pump case, then install timing belt outside covers.
9. Remove crankshaft timing belts pulley bolt, then install crankshaft pulley. Tighten bolts to specifications.
10. Install water pump pulley and drive belt.
11. Install air cleaner bracket, then air cleaner assembly.
12. Install right side fender apron extension, then connect battery ground cable.
