Timing Belt: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Remove right side fender apron extension. Do not push center pin in too far as it may fall into fender.
3. Remove alternator/water pump belt and water pump pulley.

Fig. 9 Locking Crankshaft. Automatic Transmission:

4. Remove crankshaft pulley as follows:
a. Lock crankshaft to loosen crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt and crankshaft pulley bolts, Figs. 8 and 9. If engine is in vehicle, it is necessary to remove crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt. If engine is removed from vehicle, crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt need not be removed.
b. Using 17 mm socket remove crankshaft pulley bolts and timing belt pulley bolt.
5. Remove timing outside cover.
6. Loosen tensioner bolt and stud, then push tensioner plate fully upward and remove timing belt from pulleys.

Inspection

1. Inspect timing belt for wear or cracks, replace as necessary.
2. Ensure tensioner rotates smoothly.

Installation

Fig. 14 Aligning Timing Belt Pulleys:

1. Install tensioner plate on tensioner. Lug of tensioner plate must fit in hole of tensioner.
2. Install tensioner assembly. Hand tighten tensioner bolt only at this time. Plate movement in upward direction should cause tensioner to move in same direction. If not, repeat step one.
3. Remove cylinder head cover, then completely loosen all valve adjusting screws and locknuts on intake and exhaust rocker arms.
4. Turn camshaft pulley clockwise until timing mark on pulley aligns with V mark on belt inside cover, Fig. 14.
5. Turn crankshaft timing belt pulley bolt clockwise until punch mark on pulley aligns with arrow mark on oil pump case, Fig. 14.
6. Install timing belt on pulleys with drive side of belt free from any slack and with tensioner plate pushed up by finger. Match arrow mark on timing belt with rotating direction of crankshaft (clockwise). In this position, No. 4 piston is at top dead center of compression stroke.
7. Turn crankshaft two rotations clockwise after installing belt to take up slack of belt. Ensure marks on all pulleys are aligned.
8. Tighten tensioner stud, then the tensioner bolt.
9. Ensure seal is between water pump and oil pump case, then install timing belt outside cover.
10. Remove crankshaft timing belts pulley bolt, then install crankshaft pulley. Tighten bolts to specifications.
11. Adjust valves as outlined under ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES/VALVES.
12. Install water pump pulley and drive belt.
13. Install cylinder head cover, then the air cleaner assembly.
14. Install right side fender apron extension, then connect battery ground cable.
