Engine: Service and Repair

1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove battery and tray, then the engine hood.
3. Drain coolant system into appropriate container.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly with Air Flow Meter (AFM) outlet hose.
5. Remove radiator cooling fan, then the battery ground cable from transmission.
6. Disconnect following electrical wires:
a. On models with automatic transmissions, disconnect direct clutch and second brake connectors.
b. Disconnect shift switch and speed sensor connectors.
c. On models with manual transmissions, disconnect back-up light switch connector.
d. Disconnect noise filter ground wire, then the Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve connector.
e. Disconnect high tension cable from ignition coil, then the distributor Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) connector.
f. On California models, disconnect Recirculated Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (REGTS) and Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vacuum Switching Valve (EGR VSV) connectors.
g. Disconnect Water Temperature Sensor (WTS) and oxygen sensor connectors.
h. Disconnect canister purge VSV connector, then the ground wire from intake manifold.
i. Disconnect Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and fuel injector connectors.
j. Disconnect all electrical wires from alternator and starter.
k. Disconnect oil pressure gauge connector.
l. Ensure all wires are free of clamps on engine.
7. Disconnect following cables:
a. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle lever and bracket.
b. On models with manual transmission, disconnect clutch cable.
c. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect gear select and oil pressure control cables.
d. Disconnect speed meter cable from transmission.
8. Disconnect brake booster and canister purge hoses.
9. On California models, disconnect A/C VSV hose.
10. Disconnect fuel feed and return hoses.
11. Disconnect heater inlet and outlet hoses, then remove charcoal canister from body.
12. Raise and support vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe from manifold.
13. On models with manual transmission, remove gear shift control shaft and extension rod.
14. Drain engine and transmission oil into appropriate container.
15. Remove lefthand driveshaft joint from differential gear of transmission. Remove righthand driveshaft joint from center bearing support.
16. On models with automatic transmission, remove rear torque rod bracket from transmission case.
17. Lower vehicle, then install engine lifting device.

18. On models with manual transmission, remove rear mounting from body. On automatic transmission, remove rear mounting nut, Fig. 2 and 3.
19. Remove lefthand side engine mounting bracket bolts and mounting bolt.
20. Remove righthand side engine mounting from bracket.
21. Ensure all hoses, electric wires and cable are disconnected from engine and transmission.
22. Remove engine and transmission from vehicle.
23. Remove torque convertor housing lower plate.
24. Remove driveplate bolts. Use flat head screwdriver to lock driveplate and driveplate gear.
25. Remove engine to transmission attaching bolts, then separate engine from transmission.
26. Reverse procedure to install, tighten all bolts and nuts to specification.
