Transmission

The engine and transaxle must be removed as an assembly.
1. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove battery and tray, then the engine hood.
3. Drain coolant system into appropriate container.
4. Remove air cleaner assembly with Air Flow Meter (AFM) outlet hose.
5. Remove radiator cooling fan, then the battery ground cable from transmission.
6. Disconnect the following electrical wires:
a. Disconnect direct clutch and second brake connectors.
b. Disconnect shift switch and speed sensor connectors.
c. Disconnect noise filter ground wire, then the Idle Speed Control (ISC) valve connector.
d. Disconnect high tension cable from ignition coil, then the Distributor Crank Angle Sensor (CAS) connector.
e. On California models, disconnect the Recirculated Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (REGTS) and the Exhaust Gas Recirculation Vacuum Switching Valve (EGR VSV) connectors..
f. Disconnect the Water Temperature Sensor (WTS) and oxygen sensor connectors.
g. Disconnect canister purge VSV connector, then the ground wire from intake manifold.
h. Disconnect Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) and fuel injector connectors.
i. Disconnect all electrical wires from alternator and starter.
j. Disconnect oil pressure gauge connector.
k. Ensure all wires are free of clamps on engine.
7. Disconnect the following cables:
a. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle lever and bracket.
b. Disconnect gear select and oil pressure control cables.
c. Disconnect speedometer cable from transmission.
8. Disconnect brake booster and canister purge hoses.
9. On California models, disconnect A/C VSV hose.
10. Disconnect fuel feed and return hoses.
11. Disconnect heater inlet and outlet hoses, then remove charcoal canister from body.
12. Raise and support vehicle, then remove exhaust pipe from manifold.
13. Drain engine and transmission oil into appropriate container.
14. Remove LH side driveshaft joint from differential gear of transmission. Remove RH side driveshaft joint from center bearing support.
15. Remove rear torque rod bracket from transmission case.
16. Lower vehicle, then install engine lifting device.

Fig. 10 Engine Mounting:

17. Remove rear mounting nut, Fig. 17.
18. Remove left side engine mounting bracket bolts and mounting bolt.
19. Remove right side engine mounting from bracket.
20. Ensure all hoses, electric wires and cable are disconnected from engine and transmission.
21. Remove engine and transmission from vehicle.
22. Remove torque convertor housing lower plate.
23. Remove driveplate bolts. Use flat head screwdriver to lock driveplate and driveplate gear.
24. Remove starter motor, then the transmission stiffener.
25. Remove engine to transmission attaching bolts, then separate engine from transmission.
26. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

Fig. 11 Torque Converter Installation:

a. Apply grease around cup at center of torque converter, Fig. 11.
b. Measure distance "A", Fig. 11. This distance should exceed 0.85 inch. If distance is less than specified, the torque converter is improperly installed.
c. Tighten to specification.
