Oil Pump: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
2. Hoist vehicle.
3. Drain engine oil.
4. Remove water pump belt, pulley, generator and its bracket.
5. Remove crankshaft pulley, timing belt outside cover, timing belt and tensioner as previously outlined.
6. Remove oil level gauge.
7. Remove A/C compressor bracket bolts. (if equipped.)

8. Remove crankshaft timing belt pulley and timing belt guide.
9. Remove oil pan and oil pump strainer as previously outlined.

10. Remove oil pump assembly after removing 7 bolts securing pump.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Remove level gauge guide bolt and pull out guide from oil pump.

2. Remove rotor plate.

3. Remove outer rotor and inner rotor.

INSPECTION
- Check oil seal lip for fault or other damage. Replace as necessary.
- Check outer and inner rotors, rotor plate and oil pump case for excessive wear or damage.

Radial Clearance
Check radial clearance between outer rotor and case, using thickness gauge.
If clearance exceeds its limit, replace outer rotor or case.

Radial clearance between Outer rotor and case:
Limit on radial clearance: 0.310 mm (0.0122 inch)

Side Clearance
Using straightedge and thickness gauge, measure side clearance.

Limit on side clearance 0.15 mm (0.0059 inch)

ASSEMBLY
1. Wash, clean and then dry all disassembled parts.

2. Apply thin coat of engine oil to inner and outer rotors, oil seal lip portion, and inside surfaces of oil pump case and plate.
3. Install outer and inner rotors to pump case.

4. Install rotor plate. Tighten 5 screws securely. After installing plate, check to be sure that rotors turn smoothly by hand.

Tightening Torque (a): 8 - 13 Nm (6.0 - 9.0 ft. lbs.)

5. Install guide seal to pump case and then oil level gauge guide.

INSTALLATION
1. Install two oil pump pins and oil pump gasket to cylinder block. Use a new gasket.

2. To prevent oil seal lip from being damaged or upturned when installing oil pump to crankshaft, fit special tool (Oil seal guide) to crankshaft, and apply engine oil to special tool.

Special Tool, or equivalent (A): 09926-18210

3. Install oil pump to crankshaft and cylinder block. Among 7 oil pump bolts, 4 No.1 bolts are shorter than 3 No.2 bolts in length. Install No.1 and No.2 bolts at the location shown in figure, and tighten them to the specified torque. After installing oil pump, check to be sure that oil seal lip is not upturned, and then remove special tool.

Tightening Torque (a): 9 - 12 Nm (7.0 - 8.5 ft. lbs.)

4. Install rubber seal between oil pump and water pump.

5. Install key, timing belt pulley and crankshaft pulley pin.

Tightening Torque (a): 125 - 135 Nm (90.5 - 97.5 ft. lbs.)

6. Install timing belt, tensioner, oil pan and other parts as previously outlined.
7. Adjust water pump belt tension.
8. Refill engine oil.
9. Connect negative cable at battery.
10. After completing installation, check oil pressure by running engine.
