Backing Plate: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1. Perform steps 1) to 6) of BRAKE DRUM REMOVAL.





2. Remove spindle cap as shown (by hammering lightly at 3 locations around it so as not to deform or cause damage to seating part of cap).





3. Uncalk spindle nut and remove spindle nut and washer.





4. Pull wheel hub off by using special tools.

5. Perform steps 2) to 4) of BRAKE SHOE REMOVAL.
6. Perform steps 3) and 4) of WHEEL CYLINDER REMOVAL.
7. Remove cable from brake back plate by squeezing parking brake cable stopper ring.





8. Remove brake back plate.

INSTALLATION





1. Apply water tight sealant to mating surfaces of brake back plate and rear knuckle.
"A": Sealant 99000-31090





2. Install brake back plate and tighten back plate bolts to specified torque.
Tightening Torque (a): 23 Nm (2.3 kg.m, 17.0 ft. lbs.)





3. Install parking brake cable to brake plate.
4. Install wheel cylinder, and tighten wheel cylinder bolts and brake pipe flare nut to specified torque. (Refer to steps 1) to 4) of WHEEL CYLINDER INSTALLATION.)
5. Install brake shoes, referring to steps 1) and 2) of its INSTALLATION.
6. Install wheel hub assembly, washer and new spindle nut.





7. Tighten spindle nut to specified torque.

NOTE: Removed spindle nut should be replaced with new one.

Tightening Torque (a): 175 Nm (17.5 kg.m, 126.5 ft. lbs.)





8. Calk spindle nut as shown.
9. Install spindle cap.

NOTE:
^ When installing spindle cap, hammer lightly several locations on the collar of cap until collar comes closely into contact with wheel hub.
^ If fitting part of cap is deformed or damaged or if it is fitted loosely, replace with new one.

10. For procedure hereafter, refer to steps 6) to 12) of WHEEL CYLINDER INSTALLATION.
