Removal and Installation
DISMOUNTING1. Disconnect negative cable at battery and transmission.
2. Disconnect coupler for solenoids, vehicle speed sensor (for speedometer), transmission range sensor, forward clutch cylinder revolution sensor and vehicle speed sensor (for A/T).
3. Undo wiring harness clamps.
4. Disconnect select cable from transmission.
5. Remove transmission-to-engine bolts.
6. Remove starting motor. Starting motor plate should also come down.
7. Support engine to prevent one from being declined excessively at removal of mounting supports.
8. Check around transmission for any other parts required to be removed or disconnected for dismounting of transmission and remove or disconnect whatever necessary.
9. Drain transmission fluid.
10. Remove engine under covers.
11. Disconnect fluid (oil) cooler hoses.
12. Remove mounting member.
13. Remove transmission housing lower plate.
14. Holding drive plate with a proper size rod against rotation, remove drive plate bolts.
15. Pull out left drive shaft joint at differential and right drive shaft joint at center shaft so as to release snap ring fitting.
16. Disconnect stabilizer joints from suspension arms on both sides.
17. Remove ball stud bolts and nuts from both knuckles and detach suspension arms and then pull out left drive shaft joint from differential and right drive shaft joint from center shaft.
18. Remove center shaft from differential.
19. Remove engine rear mounting and its bracket bolts at transmission case.
20. Remove engine-to-transmission bolt and nut.
21. Support transmission with transmission jack.
22. Remove bolts from engine left mounting.
23. Remove transmission with torque converter from engine compartment.
WARNING: Be sure to keep transmission with torque converter horizontal or facing up through out the work. Should it be tilted with torque converter down, converter may fall off and cause personal injury.
24. Remove engine left mounting and its bracket from transmission case.
REMOUNTING
For remounting, reverse dismounting procedure. Use the following specified torques and note points listed below.
Tightening Torque
(a): 90 Nm (9.0 kg.m, 65.0 ft. lbs.)
(b): 19 Nm (1.9 kg.m, 14.0 ft. lbs.)
(c): 28 Nm (2.8 kg.m, 20.5 ft. lbs.)
(d): 60 Nm (6.0 kg.m, 43.5 ft. lbs.)
(f): 55 Nm (5.5 kg.m, 40.0 ft. lbs.)
(g): 45 Nm (4.5 kg.m, 32.5 ft. lbs.)
- Push in each drive shaft joint fully so that snap ring engages with differential gear and center shaft respectively.
CAUTION
- Care should be taken not to scratch oil seal lip with drive shaft while inserting drive shaft joint into transmission.
- Do not hit drive shaft joint with hammer when installing it.
- Set each clamp for wiring securely.
- Adjust select cable.
- Refill fluid and adjust its level at normal operating temperature.
- Check to make sure that engine and transmission function properly.
- Make sure that these is no evidence of fluid leakage.
