INCORRECT FUEL GAUGE READING
MODEL:
ESTEEMS WITH ONBOARD REFUELING VAPOR RECOVERY (ORVR)
YEAR:

CONDITION:
When fuel tank is full the dash fuel gauge reads 1/3 tank or less.
CAUSE:
Fuel tank sending unit float arm hung up on fuel pump fuel return tube.
CORRECTION:
Install Fuel Hose Holder on the fuel pump sending unit housing as shown in this bulletin.
AFFECTED VEHICLES:
1999 MY 1.8 liter Esteems and all 2000MY Esteem vehicles.
PART INFORMATION:
1. Remove the fuel tank and fuel gauge sending unit as outlined in Section 6C of the 1999/2000 Esteem Service Manual 1600/1800 Volume 2 of 2, Engine (P/N 99500-60G10-33E).
The pictures show views of the fuel pump fuel return tube contacting the float level arm.
2. Pictured to the right is the Fuel Hose Holder Part Number # 34814-65G00.
3. Locate the opening where the Fuel Hose Holder installs into the float level rheostat gauge assembly. Pointer in the picture to the right indicates where the opening is in the gauge assembly.
4. Insert the straight end of the Fuel Hose Holder into the gauge assembly and push it in until it locks into position.
5. The Fuel Hose Holder will lock into position by the plastic locking tabs when it is gently pushed fully into position. Pointer in the picture to the right indicates the plastic locking tabs.
6. With the Fuel Hose Holder locked in position, the curved end of the holder will prevent the fuel pump return hose from contacting the float arm.
7. Reinstall the fuel pump into the tank and reinstall the tank on to the vehicle. Check to ensure all electrical and hose connections are tight and there are no fuel leaks. Refuel the vehicle and road test it to ensure proper operation.
