Timing Cover: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative cable at battery.
2. Drain engine oil.
3. Drain coolant.
4. Remove air cleaner case with air cleaner outlet hose.
5. Disconnect radiator inlet hose from radiator and then remove radiator cooling fan.

6. Remove right side of engine under cover.
7. Remove generator belt.

8. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt.
To lock crankshaft pulley, use special tool (camshaft pulley holder) with it as shown in figure.
Special Tool
(A): 09917-68221

NOTE: Be sure to use the following bolts instead of pins for fixing special tool to crankshaft pulley.

Bolt size: M8, P1.25 l = 25 mm (0.98 inch)
Strength: 7T

9. Remove crankshaft pulley.
To remove crankshaft pulley, use special tools (Steering wheel remover, Bearing puller attachment) with it as shown in figure.
Special Tools
(A): 09944-36011
(B): 09926-58010

10. Remove oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, Engine.
When remove mounting member, use lifting device instead of engine support jack.
11. Remove engine front torque bush, rear mounting and rear mounting No.2 bracket.

12. With hoses connected, detach A/C compressor from compressor bracket.

NOTE: Suspend removed A/C compressor at a place free from any possible damage during removal and installation of timing chain cover.

13. Remove A/C compressor bracket.
14. Disconnect P/S oil tank from body.
15. Disconnect electric lead wire couplers (heated oxygen sensor and A/C magnet clutch) and release clamps.

16. Remove engine RH mounting.

17. Using lifting device, raise engine enough to allow removal of water pump pulley, generator belt idler pulley, generator belt tensioner and remove them.

CAUTION:
^ Do not loosen generator belt tensioner bolt and disassemble generator belt tensioner assembly, as It may spoil its original performance.
^ Do not raise engine excessively. That may cause damage to engine, transmission, etc.

18. Remove cylinder head cover.

19. Remove timing chain cover bolts and nut.
20. Using lifting device, raise engine enough to allow removal of timing chain cover and remove it.

CAUTION: Do not raise engine excessively. That may cause damage to engine, transmission, etc.

After removing timing chain cover, lower engine till front torque bush and rear mounting are set onto mounting member.

CLEAN
^ Clean sealing surface on timing chain cover, crank case, cylinder block and cylinder head.
Remove oil, old sealant, and dust from sealing surface.

INSPECTION

^ Check oil seal lip for fault or other damage.
Replace as necessary.

NOTE: When installing new oil seal, drive it in until its surface is flash with edge of timing chain cover. To install oil seal, use special tool (bearing Installer).

Special Tool

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: When raising engine, be careful not to raise it excessively and not to cause transmission to contact body, steering gear box, etc. Excessive raise may cause damage to engine, transmission, etc.

Reverse removal sequence to install timing chain cover noting the following points.

1. Apply sealant "A" and "B" to area as shown in figure.
"A": Sealant 99000-31150
"B": Sealant 99000-31140

2. Apply engine oil to oil seal lip, then install timing chain cover. Tighten bolts and nut to specified torque.

NOTE: Before installing timing chain cover, check that pin Is securely fitted.

Tightening Torque (a): 11.0 Nm (1.1 kg-m, 8.0 ft. lbs.)

3. Install generator belt idler pulley. Tighten nut to specified torque.
Tightening Torque (a): 45 Nm (4.5 kg-m, 33.0 ft. lbs.)
4. Install generator belt tensioner.
Tighten bolts to specified torque.
Tightening Torque (b): 25 Nm (2.5 kg-m, 18.5 ft. lbs.)
5. Install water pump pulley.

6. Install engine RH mounting. Tighten bolts and nut to specified torque.
Tightening Torque (a): 55 Nm (5.5 kg-m, 40.0 ft. lbs.)
7. Install A/C compressor and compressor bracket.
8. Install engine front torque bush, rear mounting and rear No.2 mounting bracket.
9. Install oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan, Engine.

10. Install crankshaft pulley. To lock crankshaft pulley, use special tool (camshaft pulley holder) with it as shown in figure.
Special Tool
(A): 09917-68221

NOTE: Be sure to use the following bolts instead of pins for fixing special tool to crank pulley.

Bolt size: M8, P1.25 l = 25 mm (0.98 inch)
Strength: 7T
Tightening Torque (a): 150 Nm (15.0 kg-m 108.5 ft. lbs.)
11. Install generator belt.
12. Refill cooling system with coolant and engine with engine oil.
13. Verify that there is no water leakage, oil leakage and exhaust gas leakage at each connection.
