Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect electrical connectors from shift lever switch.
3. Remove shift lever switch from manual shift shaft.

INSTALLATION
1. Shift manual shift lever to Manual range.

2. Using a suitable screwdriver, turn shift lever switch to the position as shown, Fig. 7, and ensure a click is heard from joint at this position.

3. Install switch to manual shift shaft, then move the shaft in direction of arrow, Fig. 8, until a click is heard. Stop at this position and tighten to specification.
4. Connect electrical connectors to switch, then install clamp.
5. Apply parking brake and block wheels, then check the following:
a. With selector lever in Park position and ignition switch On, ensure starter motor operates.
b. With selector lever in Neutral position and ignition switch On, ensure starter motor operates.
c. After moving selector lever from Neutral to Low position, then back to Neutral position, ensure starter motor operates with ignition switch On.
d. With selector lever in Park position and ignition switch On, ensure starter motor operates.
e. In any range other than Park or Neutral positions, ensure starter motor cannot be operated.
f. With selector lever in Reverse position and ignition switch On, (engine not running), ensure back-up lamps light.
