Tie Rod: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove steering gear case assembly by performing Steps 1 - 8 in Steering Gear Case Assembly Removal.





2. For ease of adjustment after installation, make marking of tie rod end lock nut position of tie rod thread.
3. Loosen tie rod end lock nut and remove tie rod end.





4. Remove boot clamp and clip.
5. Remove boot from tie rod.





6. Remove tie rod from rack.
If it is hard to loosen tie rod ball nut, unbend bent part of ball nut.

INSTALLATION
1. Install new tie rod to steering rack.





2. Tighten tie rod ball nut to specified torque.

Tightening Torque (a): 70 Nm (7.0 kg-m, 51.0 ft. lbs.)





3. Using a proper size rod, tap and crimp parts "A" of ball nut on flat parts "B" of rack until dimension "a" between crimping parts "A" becomes 24 mm (0.94 inch) or less to prevent tie rod from loosening.





4. Apply grease to "A" indicated in figure. "A": Grease supplied with spare parts or specified lithium grease.
5. Position boot properly in grooves of gear case and tie rod. Check to ensure that boot is free from twist and dent.





6. Fasten boot with new clamp and clip securely.

Special Tool (a): 09943-55010






7. install tie rod end lock nut and tie rod end to tie rod. Position lock nut to marking made in removal.

NOTE: When tie rod was replaced, measure length "A" on removed tie rod and use it on new replacement tie rod so as to position lock nut properly.
