Engine Basic Inspection
This check is very important for troubleshooting when ECM has detected no DTC and no abnormality has been found in visual inspection.
Follow the flow carefully.
1.
Was "Engine System Check" performed?
YES
Go to Step 2.
NO
Go to Engine System Check Engine System Check.
2. Check battery voltage.
Is it 11 V or more?
YES
Go to Step 3.
NO
Charge or replace battery.
3.
Is engine cranked?
YES
Go to Step 4.
NO
Go to Cranking System Symptom Diagnosis.
4.
Does engine start?
YES
Go to Step 5.
NO
Go to Step 7.
5. Check idle speed as follows:
Warm up engine to normal operating temp.
Shift transmission to neutral position for M/T ("P" position for A/T).
All of electrical loads are switched off.
Check engine idle speed with scan tool.
Is it 700 - 800 r/min.?
YES
Go to Step 6.
NO
Go to Engine Symptom Diagnosis Engine Symptom Diagnosis.
6. Check ignition timing as follows:
Using SUZUKI scan tool, select "MISC" mode on SUZUKI scan tool and fix ignition timing to initial one.
Remove timing hole cap on transmission case to observe ignition timing.
Using timing light, check initial ignition timing.
[F]: M/T Vehicle
[G]: A/T Vehicle
1. Timing mark on clutch housing
2. Timing mark on torque converter housing
3. Timing mark (BTDC 5 °)
Is it 5 ° ± 1 ° BTDC at specified idle speed?
YES
Go to Engine Symptom Diagnosis Engine Symptom Diagnosis.
NO
Adjust ignition timing referring to Testing and Inspection Ignition Timing Inspection and Adjustment.
7. Check fuel supply as follows:
Check to make sure that enough fuel is filled in fuel tank.
Turn ON ignition switch for 3 seconds and then OFF. Repeat this a few times.
Check fuel return pressure (returning sounds) on fuel return hose (1).
Is fuel return pressure (returning sounds) felt from fuel return hose when ignition switch is turned ON?
YES
Go to Step 9.
NO
Go to Step 8.
8. Check fuel pump for operating.
Was fuel pump operating sound heard from fuel filler for about 2 seconds after ignition switch ON and stop?
YES
Go to Fuel Pressure Check Fuel Pressure Check.
NO
Go to Fuel Pump Circuit Check Fuel Pump Circuit Check.
9. Check ignition spark as follows:
Disconnect injector couplers.
Remove spark plugs and connect them to ignition coils.
Ground spark plugs.
Crank engine and check if each spark plug sparks.
Is it in good condition?
YES
Go to Step 10.
NO
Go to Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures Ignition System Symptom Diagnosis.
10. Check fuel injector for operation as follows:
Install spark plugs and connect injector connectors.
Using sound scope (5), check operating sound of each injector when cranking engine.
Was injector operating sound heard from all injectors?
YES
Go to Engine Symptom Diagnosis Engine Symptom Diagnosis.
NO
Go to Fuel Injector Circuit Check Fuel Injector Circuit Check.
