Body - Paint Peeling On Door Frame

CONDITION:
Paint may peel on inner door frames around the window area on some vehicles built from June 15, 2004 to July 09, 2004. Specific VIN numbers of affected vehicles are listed on the list.

CAUSE:
Anti-corrosion oil coating from the manufacturing process may not have been completely removed from rolled seams before the painting process. During the paint baking process the coating may bleed out under the paint causing it to lose adhesion to the surface.

CORRECTION:
If the vehicles VIN number is on the list, inspect the door area indicated in the pictures below for paint bubbling or peeling. If a defect is found follow the repaint procedure.





WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION:

Inspection Procedure

1. Inspection all 4 Door frames at the indicated points. Refer to the photo on right for inspection area.

2. To check paint peeling, scratch or rub along the folded valley of door frame panel about 100 mm from upper 30 mm of door inner welding point.
(Use something like the head of a ball point pen)

3. If the paint chips away follow the repaint procedure.

If there is no paint chipping, no further action is required.

Repaint Procedure

1. Partially remove the door weatherstrip.

Note:
Refer to the appropriate section of the Service Manual.

If necessary remove the door trim to avoid hitting it with paint overspray or heat damage while drying

2. Clean the paint chipping area using solvent.

3. Sand the chipped area using Sand paper (# 600 - # 800)

4. Clean the sandpapered area again using solvent.

5. Mask around area to be painted.

6. Spray top base color same as body color and then spray clear coating.

Note:
Refer to attachment for paint characteristics of top base color.

7. Dry paint area using something like hand dryer

Note:
Be cautious of heat damage while drying.

8. Install the removed parts following Service Manual instructions.
