Steering - Rubbing/Growling Noise When Turning

A NOISE CAN BE HEARD SIMILAR TO GROWLING OR RUBBING WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL LEFT OR RIGHT, MOST NOTICEABLE WHEN PARKING

CONDITION:

A noise can be heard inside the vehicle when turning the steering wheel.

CAUSE:

Rubber to rubber contact of steering shaft dust boot.

CORRECTION:

Please follow the instructions to lubricate the rubber boot where the steering shaft goes through the firewall. On vehicles up to the affected VIN, cut away a section of rubber from the dust boot of the lower steering shaft. Vehicles on and after the affected VIN will have the updated dust boot.





WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

Lubrication and dust boot modification





1. Apply silicone grease on the lower steering shaft located under the driver side of the dash below the steering wheel.





2. Locate the steering gear input shaft under the hood and identify the dust boot. Rotate the steering wheel to position the pinch bolt on the fire wall side.








3. Using a utility knife cut away a section of the dust boot 3 mm from the bottom as indicated. Please note the updated dust boot does not contact the rubber cover of the input shaft housing. Do not cut an updated dust boot.
