M/T - Stuck In 5th Gear: Overview

MANUAL TRANSMISSION STUCK IN 5TH GEAR

MODEL(S):
FORENZA SEDAN/WAGON, RENO (RQ420)

YEAR: 2004-2008

CONDITION:

Transmission is locked in 5th gear and will not shift into any other gear.

CAUSE:

5th speed cluster gear retaining ring may be installed backwards which allows the 5th speed cluster gear to work its way off the input shaft. This causes 5th gear synchronizer ring to jam between the 5th gear assembly and 5th gear shift sleeve assembly.

CORRECTION:

To verify that this is the cause, the transmission end cover must be removed to inspect the fifth speed cluster gear. Please follow the instructions below to verify this condition and repair the transmission assembly while installed in the vehicle.
