CONDITION:
An Engine Control Module (ECM) program fault could cause the fuel to air ratio to become too lean in some circumstances, resulting in engine stalling.
CAUSE:
ECM software logic.
CORRECTION:
Replace the Engine Control Module (ECM)
NOTE:
When the KE Recall is completed, check the vehicle to see if the vehicle is included in the KC Recall and whether the KC Recall has already been completed. If the KC Recall has not been completed be sure to affix both the KE and KC completion stickers to the radiator support as shown below. For California vehicles be sure to provide the customer with a Proof of Correction certification as explained in the KC Emission Recall Bulletin No. SC-24.

Procedure:
1. Open the hood and check for the KE sticker on the core support. If present, do not perform the repair, it has already been done. If not present, continue to the next step.
2. Write down all radio presets.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Loosen the nut to remove the battery hold down "J" bolt nearest the ECM.
4. Disconnect the ECM connector by pulling out the clip while pulling up on the connector. Note: Using a side to side motion may be necessary to loosen the connector.
5. Loosen the ECM bracket retaining nuts one turn and slide the ECM straight up.
6. Remove the nuts and retainer from the old ECM and install them on the new ECM.
Reinstall the ECM in the vehicle mounting bracket.
Torque the nuts to 10 ~ 14 N.m (89 ~ 124 lb.-in).
7. Reconnect the ECM connectors by pushing down while pushing the clips in until they are fully engaged.
8. Reinstall the battery hold down and reconnect the battery negative cable.
9. Enter the dealer number and affix the "KE" sticker to the radiator core support.
If the "KC" Recall has not already been completed enter dealer number on the "KE" & "KC" stickers and affix them both to the radiator core support as shown.
NOTE:
The "KE" & "KC" stickers must have your dealer number and be affixed on all vehicles that have a new ECM installed.
10. Close the hood start the engine. Ensure the parking brake is set and allow the engine to idle until it reaches full operating temperature. Then follow the idle relearn procedure in the appropriate section of the Service Manual.
11. Input the radio security code if necessary and reprogram the radio presets.
12. Set the clock.
