Recall - Brake Light Switch Replacement
Section Title: BrakesTSB No. TS 01 02045
Division: Automotive
Category: Technical
SUBJECT: BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH REPLACEMENT "KF" CAMPAIGN
MODEL(S): VERONA
YEAR: 2004
AFFECTED VIN(S):
KL5VJ52L_4B097278-KL5VJ52L_4B137099
KL5VM52L_4B097278-KL5VM52L_4B137099
CONDITION:
Brake lights remain on continuously without brake pedal application.
CAUSE:
The brake light switch may become misadjusted if an upward/rearward force is applied to the brake pedal. The electrical contacts in a misadjusted brake light switch may not open when the brake pedal is at its natural rest position causing the brake lights to remain on continuously without brake pedal application, with the ignition switch on or off.
CORRECTION:
Replace the brake light switch with the new brake light switch listed below. Refer to replacement procedure.
NOTE:
Veronas with the threaded type brake light switch are not affected by this TSB.
PART(S) INFORMATION
NOTE:
For Claim Submission information please refer to Campaign Bulletin SC-27
Replacement Procedure
1. Be sure the vehicle is safely parked with the ignition switch OFF.
2. Check the brake light switch and make sure it is not a threaded-type switch. The threaded type brake light switch is not included in this recall; do not replace a threaded-type switch.
3. Working under the dash, disconnect the brake light switch plug connector.
4. Turn the switch 90 degrees in either direction and then remove the switch from the brake pedal bracket hole.
5. Prepare a new brake light switch for installation.
6. The new switch has two terminals only and replaces any switch that may have four terminals.
7. Pull out the switch plunger to its maximum extension. This will take some force.
NOTE:
The fully-extended length is about 15/16 in. (24 mm) from the points indicated in the picture shown.
8. Connect the brake light switch plug connector into the new switch.
9. Depress and hold the brake pedal. Insert the brake light switch into the brake pedal bracket hole.
10. Turn the brake light switch 90 degrees in either direction to the locked position.
11. With the plunger still at it's maximum extension release the pedal slowly until it contacts the head of the plunger of the brake light switch.
NOTE:
The brake light switch self adjusts when the brake pedal contacts the plunger. If the brake lights remain ON after installing the switch, push the pedal down and pull the plunger out again. The switch will readjust when the pedal is released.
12. Check to see if the brake lights now function as intended.
13. Affix a "KF" sticker on the radiator core support as shown in the picture. Additional stickers can be ordered through normal parts ordering procedures. See Parts Information for part number and order quantity detail.
