A/T - Correct Torque Converter Bolt Usage

Section Title: Transmission/Transaxle

TSB No. TS04 01315

Division: Automotive

Category: Technical

SUBJECT:
CORRECT TORQUE CONVERTER BOLTS

MODEL(S):
AERIO

YEAR:
2002

CONDITION:
Failure of replacement automatic transmissions due to the use of either (1) torque converter to flywheel bolts of excessive length, or (2) over torquing correctly sized bolts.

CAUSE:
Using bolts that are too long or over torquing torque converter bolts of the correct length will cause internal dimpling of the TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) friction surface. This dimpling will cause the TCC friction material to be scraped off which will damage the transmission.

CORRECTION:
Only use correctly-sized torque converter mounting bolts as listed in the parts catalogue or this bulletin, and torque to the proper specifications according to the appropriate Service Manual with an accurate torque wrench. Do not use powered tools to install the torque converter mounting bolts.
