FORENZASection Title: Transmission
TSB No.TS04 12056
Division: Automotive
Category: Technical
SUBJECT:
IGNITION KEY WILL NOT COME OUT OF IGNITION SWITCH
MODEL(S):
FORENZA SEDAN/WAGON, RENO (RQ420)
YEAR:
ALL
CONDITION:
When attempting to remove the ignition key from the ignition switch tumbler, the key will not turn to return the ignition switch to the locked position to allow key removal.
CAUSE:
The park switch in the gear selector control lever may have a broken anchoring tab causing the switch contact to stay open. This open circuit prevents the ignition tumbler solenoid from allowing the tumbler to rotate to the locked position to allow for ignition key removal.
CORRECTION:
Inspect the park position switch located in the selector control lever assembly for looseness. See instructions below. Replace the Selector Lever Solenoid Assembly (28610-85z00) if the park switch has come out of its designated location.

Inspection and Replacement:
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Shift the transmission to "L" and shut of the engine. Move both front seats to the full forward position and remove the screws located on both sides of the rear section of the center console. There will be one screw on each side of the center console.
2. Slide the front seats to their full rearward position and remove the two screws from the front section of the center console. There will be one screw on each side of the center console.
3. Slide the rear console back far enough to expose the two screws that secure the front center console.
4. With the gear selector still in the "L" position, lift the front center console up and toward the rear of the vehicle.
5. Continue to lift the console while maneuvering it around the shifter and parking brake levers.
6. Move the front center console aside. It is not necessary to disconnect the electrical connector.
7. Pull gently on the park position switch wires indicated. If the switch easily comes out, continue to step 8 to replace the selector lever solenoid assembly. If the switch does not come out, this repair procedure does not apply. Further diagnosis of the system is required.
8. Remove the two front bolts and the two rear nuts that secure the gear shifter assembly to the floor.
9. Rotate the gear shift assembly toward the driver side. Remove the two selector lever solenoid screws indicated.
NOTE:
The airbag harness will allow the selector assembly enough movement to get to the two screws that secure the solenoid.
10. Unplug and remove the harness connector by releasing the anchor. The solenoid, park position switch and connector should now be removed as an assembly.
11. Install the new assembly making sure to align the solenoid in the lock lever as shown.
12. Bolt the selector assembly back to the floor. Be sure no harnesses are pinched and be sure the console mounting bracket is mounted on top of the selector assembly base.
13. Re-assemble the front and rear center console. Be sure to not scratch the shifter knob when re-installing the front console.
