Oil Filter: Service and Repair
Engine Oil and Filter Change
WARNING:
There is an increased risk of severe personal injury or health problems if the procedure described below is performed without taking proper precautions.
- Engine oil has an adverse health effect. Be sure to read and understand the instructions in General Precautions General Precautions
and follow all the instructions.
- Confirm that the engine is not running when performing Steps 1) - 11) of the procedure.
- Be sure to adequately ventilate the working area when starting the engine in Step 12).
CAUTION:
Touching a hot exhaust manifold will cause a burn.
Do not perform oil filter change until the exhaust manifold is cool.
Before draining engine oil, check engine for oil leakage. If any sign of leakage is found, make sure to correct defective part before proceeding to the following procedure.
1) Remove right side engine under cover.
2) Drain engine oil by removing drain plug (1).
3) Wipe drain plug and its mounting surface clean. Reinstall drain plug with new gasket and tighten it to specified torque.
Tightening torque
Engine oil drain plug (a): 35 Nm (3.6 kgf-m, 26.0 lbf-ft)
4) Loosen oil filter (1) using special tool, and then remove it through space between exhaust manifold and A/C condenser cooling fan.
Special Tool
(A): 09915-40611
5) Wipe oil filter mounting surface of cylinder block cleanly.
6) Apply engine oil to new oil filter O-ring.
7) Screw new filter on oil filter stand by hand until filter O-ring touches filter mounting surface.
NOTE:
Improper tightening of the oil filter could result in oil leakage.
When installing the filter, always identify the position at which the O-ring first contacts the filter-mounting surface and then tighten it further by 3/4 of a turn.
8) Tighten oil filter (1) 3/4 turn from the point of contact with filter mounting surface using special tool.
Special Tool
(A): 09915-40611
Tightening torque
Oil filter (a): 14 Nm (1.4 kgf-m, 10.5 lbf-ft)
9) Replenish oil up to FULL level mark on oil level gauge (oil pan and oil filter capacity). The filler inlet is at top of cylinder head cover.
Use only engine oil of American Petroleum Institute (API) Certified for Gasoline Engines "starburst" symbol.
It is highly recommended to use SAE 5W-30 oil.
NOTE:
Engine oil capacity is specified below. However, note that the amount of oil required when actually changing oil may somewhat differ from the data depending on various conditions (temperature, viscosity, etc.)
Engine oil specifications
Oil pan capacity: About 4.3 liters (9.09 US pt. / 7.57 Imp pt.)
Oil filter capacity: About 0.2 liters (0.42 US pt. / 0.35 Imp pt.)
Others: About 0.7 liters (1.48 US pt. / 1.23 Imp pt.)
Total: About 5.2 liters (10.99 US pt. / 9.15 Imp pt.)
10) Check oil filter and drain plug for oil leakage.
11) Install right side engine under cover.
12) Start engine and run it for 3 min. Stop it and wait 5 min before checking oil level. If necessary, add oil up to FULL level mark (hole) (1) on oil level gauge.
